Colour sorting activities for your toddler

It’s getting cooler and the days are getting shorter. I’ve found your kiddo 3 quick and fun activities to help keep your kiddo occupied when they’re cooped up indoors on those wet, rainy, windy, cold days that are ahead.

These three all focus on colour and sorting. It’s never too early for your little one to start learning and not only are you their Mum, you also have the very important role of being your child’s first teacher.

Kiddos learn best through exploration and play, through experiencing things first hand, and by making their own connections. These connections usually happen through trial and error and making more than a few mistakes along the way. Mistakes are good thing and being willing to have a go and risk taking are incredibly important skills to have when learning any new skill or task.

These 3 activities tick all the boxes. Quick, fun, easy and they allow your little love to learn through experience and exploring, all with their favourite person by their side guiding them; you.

FUN FACT: Sorting and classifying is a very early mathematical concept. It’s a fundamental building block that your little one will keep building on throughout their school journey and beyond. These activities all allow your kiddo to experiment with what matches and what doesn’t, what looks the same and what looks different.

Did you know that when your kiddo is practicing a new technique or skill or word or behaviour, they’re actually firing off neurones in their brain that create synapsis or pathways, and that the more often they can practice those skills and techniques, the stronger those pathways become. That’s why you can never do these sorts of activities too many times – there’s just no such thing! The more practice and repetition they can experience, the better.

Learning how to sort and classify things is also why kiddos do things like:

  • Try and scrub the toilet with their toothbrush, “But THAT brush can go in here, *points to toilet brush*, why can’t THIS brush, *points to tooth brush*, go in here?!”
  • Brush their teeth with the toilet brush, “But THAT brush goes in my mouth, *points to tooth brush*, why can’t THIS brush, *points to toilet brush*, go in my mouth?!”
  • Eat food off the floor. “That piece of pasta in my bowl is ok to eat, but the piece of pasta on the floor under your chair isn’t ok?!”
  • Drink from the dog’s bucket and eat’s from their bowl. “Wait, HE’S allowed to eat from there, but you freak when I do?!”
